STOP Act Grants available: Deadline May 26
Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act (STOP Act) grants are currently available through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. These grants are intended to help communities improve coordination among governments, local organizations and citizens to address the issue of youth alcohol use. Applicants must propose activities that align with the recommendations of the 2007 Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking. The grants are available only to private nonprofit or public organizations that are recipients of Drug-Free Community grant funds and those that have not yet received a STOP Act grant. On April 9, 2009, Vice Presdient Joe Biden announced the allocation of $2.3 billion in ARRA funds to help care for children, prevent disease. The states will recieve $2 billion to support childcare for working families. The administration also plans to make $300 million in vaccines and grants available to ensure more underserved Americans receive the vaccines they need. Stimulus funding includes the Child Care Development Block Grant, and $1 billion for the Community Services Block Grant, as well as nutrition programs for the elderly.
